Can I use my tax refund to pay my dentist for dental work?

Yes, but you can only pay for new work.  dentist

If you pay the dentist for work already performed, you have made a preferential transfer to him prior to filing, and the bankruptcy trustee can sue the dentist to get that money back so that he can divide it equally between all creditors.  This does not make the dentist happy at all.

So, if you want to pay for braces that he is going to install or for a root canal that he’s going to perform.  Yes.  If you are paying him for work done last month, no.
